Shortening a winch rope -

6. After a short time, the rope will break at the     intended location.

1. Clamp the winch rope in the vise.

2. Position the loose end in the turning tool and tighten the clamp. (Note: fabricate a turning tool similar to the one illustrated in photo 5).

3. Using a welding torch, heat the winch rope along a length of  approx. 4 inches (100 mm).

7. Allow the rope to cool by atmosphere.

4. When the winch rope begins to glow, slowly turn it counter clockwise three to four times with the turning tool.

5. When turning the rope, the force applied must be increased slowly and uniformly to ensure as clean a break as possible.

8. The uniform force applied when turning the rope with the turning tool ensures a smooth break. As a result the end of the winch rope should require minimal dressing with a grinding tool.
